Brazilian Prostitutes are Learning a Valuable Lesson

In preparation for the 2013 Confederation’s Cup, and the 2014 World Cup, prostitutes in the city of Belo Horizonte are preparing for the extra clientele with an additional lesson. Although only 20 of 4000 members have signed up so far, Cida Vieira, president of the Association of Prostitutes, expects at least 400 prostitutes to sign up for free English lessons.

Prostitution, which is legal in Brazil, is part of the private sector like any other job. Cida Vieira explained that:

It will be important for the girls who will be able to use English to let their clients know what they are charging and learn about what turns them on.

Interestingly, prostitution, one of the oldest professions in the world, is legal in a large number of countries, including:

Africa (regulated): Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal
Africa (unregulated): Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Sierra Leone

Asia (regulated): none
