30,000 Year Old Cave Paintings Are Actually Animations

A new study suggests that 30,000 year old Stone Age cave paintings found in multiple sites throughout Europe implement animated effects.
The paintings superimpose two drawings on top of each other so that horses appear to gallop, buffalo flick their tails, and birds flap their wings. The effect is most noticeable when viewed with flickering torch light.
The reserachers also beleive that people of this period created early thaumatropes, or discs with a pciture on each side that, when spun with a string, crate what appears to be animated movement. The researchers mentioned “a bone disc found in 1868 in the Dordogne. On one side, the disc features a standing doe or a chamois. On the other side, the animal is lying down. Azéma and Rivère discovered if a string was threaded through the central hole and then stretched tight to make the disc rotate about its lateral axis, the result was a superimposition of the two pictures on the retina.
They are claiming that these tools were the far distant beginnings of cinema.
How about a 30,000 year retrospective Oscar for our ancestors that made the movies that we love possible?

Teens Give Head at Unprecedented Rates: Oral Sex On the Rise
The CDC has announced that two thirds of teens have had oral sex, the same number as those that have had sexual intercourse. This reflects a complete change in the hierarchy of sexual intercourse compared to previous generations.
Oral sex was thought to be used to defer vaginal sex, but that is far from the truth. Kids are regularly engaging in oral sex just as much as they practice vaginal sex.
Even more interestingly, the previous gender gap of ‘give and take’ in regards to oral sex has virtually disappeared. The researchers found that
girls and boys gave and received oral sex equally and that sexual activity began at roughly the same age, with 44% of 15- to 17-year-old boys and 39% of girls of that age engaging in some kind of sexual activity with an opposite-sex partner.”
Although it is nearly impossible to contract AIDS orally, and impossible to become pregnant, there is still the risk of disease. This has lead experts to believe there is more need than ever to make oral sex part of regular sex education. Or, in my opinion, actually teach kids about sex during regular sex education.
What is the point of delaying the inevitable and potentially putting our children at risk just because we are afraid they might lose the innocence we ascribe to them? I have news for you; your child was born a human, there is nothing non-sexual or innocent about them.
Do your child a favor, take responsibility and educate them fully about the world you brought them into.

NASA Animated Temperature Data From Over 100 Years

NASA has created an animated video showing the changes in global temperatures from 1880 to 2011. Whether you believe humans are responsible for global warming or not, it would certainly appear, according this data (and a seemingly endless string of other evidence) that the Earth is most definitely warming up.If you’re concerned about the actual Earth, allow me to impart to you some Carlin-esque wisdom:
“The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?”
Plastic… asshole.””

Bacteria Consumes 200,000 tons of Oil Spill

http://www-tc.pbs.org/ Since the 2010 Horizon Deepwater oil spill, naturally occurring bacteria in the Gulf of Mexico has consumed over 200,000 tons of oil. Researchers are currently examining the rate at which these oil gluttons eat and how much bacteria it would take to clean an entire affected region.
Various organisms in the ocean have already collectively consumed over 50% of the oil. Researchers believe that this specific bacteria will eventually consume all of the oil from the spill, with the exception of the very heavy hydrocarbons that shows up as tar balls in the oceans.
My advice? Put your efforts into finding an effective bacteria aphrodisiac and tell those little guys to start pumping!

Plants Can Cry For Help
When predatory insects lay eggs on a plant, the plant will change its scent and structure to attract other bugs that eat those eggs. They will also preemptively emit scents that ward off known pests.
A research team focused on the parasites of the cabbage plant and discovered that cabbage can very specifically alter its scent and structure in order to selectively attract certain insects. If a butterfly lays eggs on the cabbage plant, the plant may emit a scent that attracts wasps which like to feed on the eggs. This is all done well before the hungry caterpillars hatch.
Although it is strange, plants are just as alive and conscious as any other form of life.
For a vast amount of evidence and information regarding plants and consciousness I highly recommend reading The Secret Life of Plants. It documents a wide range of research in the field of biology on plants that you have probably never even heard of.

Amateur Astronomer Films Jupiter Explosion
Amateur astronomer Dan Peterson filmed a comet making an explosive entry into Jupiter’s atmosphere and has provided viewers with the video. For those of us interested in events happening outside of Terra, this is really cool footage.
Apparently the last asteroid strike on the planet in 2009 left a scar the size of the Pacific Ocean on the planet’s cloud tops. That is huge!
To get a better idea of Jupiter’s size take a look at this image captured by the Cassini spacecraft.

Controlling Dreams and Implanting Memories

MIT researchers have successfully manipulated the dreams of rats using audio cues, leading scientists to believe we have entered the beginning of an age of “dream engineering.”
What do rats dream about anyway? Running through mazes of course. The researchers repeated the same audio cues while they were dreaming that rats heard at a certain point in the maze while they were awake. What they found was neural activity identical to the particular point in the waking life maze that they were trying to recreate in the dream. Using a simple audio cue, they were able to control which part of the maze the rats dreamed of.
Even stranger, researchers are beginning to implant memories and produce artificial memory recall in mice. They have located the neurons specifically responsible for memories, and manipulating these neurons, they can erase specific memories, or even create new ones!
While this could be a breakthrough for several types of psychotherapy, these studies are the stuff of paranoid nightmares.
Don’t be surprised if you wake up tomorrow and realize you’re actually a super agent from Mars, or a brain in a jar being tampered with in some distant future. Okay, fine, be surprised, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

MIT Creates a Way To Separate Oil From Water Magnetically

panikgulfoilspill.wikispaces.com How do we separate oil from our wildlife? Researchers at MIT have created a method to separate oil from water using magnets. This is of growing importance as oil spills occur more frequently around the world and the need to separate oil from our natural water rises. The method to separate oil from water created by MIT has great potential as the need for this maneuver rises in society. So how does it work? By mixing water repellent, ferrous nano particles into the oil, they are able to separate the mixture from the water at a later time.
It is a simple method that can be used
on a larger scale and deployed at sea for days or weeks, where electrical power is scarce and maintenance facilities limited.
The use of this technology can reduce costs and increase effectiveness of clean up efforts. Let’s look at a couple reasons why it is important to separate oil from water in an oil spill situation. According to the New York Times in 2010,
As of Aug. 16, more than 7,000 birds, sea turtles and dolphins have been found dead or debilitated in the gulf since the oil spill began. A majority of the dead were not visibly oiled, and officials have yet to determine why they died. But they have confirmed that many more animals are dying than during the same time period in previous years.
It is not necessarily that the spilled oil killed the animals, but that the oil disrupted a delicate ecosystem in which the animals lived and the failure to quickly and effectively separate oil from the life giving water of their ecosystem was detrimental to their life and impaired their ability to survive. The U.S. Department of Commerce: Office of Response and Restoration talks about the detrimental effects of oil on marine life including both animals and plants.
Spilled oil can harm living things because its chemical constituents are poisonous. This can affect organisms both from internal exposure to oil through ingestion or inhalation and from external exposure through skin and eye irritation. Oil can also smother some small species of fish or invertebrates and coat feathers and fur, reducing birds’ and mammals’ ability to maintain their body temperatures.
The health of our ocean ecosystems and bodies of water depend on action that is both quick and effective. This method of used to separate oil from ocean water could lead to a quick way to deal with one of society’s ever prevalent tragedies.
Researchers did not mention possible negative effects that mixing in ferrous nano particles will have, if any, but I suppose for right now it is better than oceans full of oil.
Go science!
